Persons With Disabilities
Honolulu International Airport has worked hard to ensure that passengers with disabilities are able to move through the airport facilities with ease. Persons with disabilities will generally find Honolulu International Airport to be wheelchair accessible, although prior planning is advisable to ensure a safe and comfortable trip.
TIPS FOR TRAVELERSThe Department of Health Disability and Communication Access Board offers these tips for travelers with disabilities. Click here for a link to their website.
GETTING AROUND THE AIRPORTPorter ServicesUpon request, airlines will provide assistance to passengers with special needs through their Skycap (porter) services. Skycaps affiliated with your airline can provide assistance with public transportation and also boarding and disembarking at your gate. The Skycaps have been trained to assist travelers with disabilities and provide wheelchairs at the check-in counter, gate or baggage claim area. Please advise your airline in advance to arrange for any special services to ensure assistance.
Airport ShuttleA free intra-airport passenger transportation system is available to transport passengers between the terminals and stops at the main lobby area, outlying gates, baggage claim and the Interisland Terminal.
The majority of our buses are accessible with lifts or ramps. Some of the older buses in our fleet may use an accessible van to transport persons with disabilities. To ensure assistance upon arrival, arrangements should be made through your airline or the Visitor Information Program staff at 808-836-6413 (V/T) .
TERMINALSHonolulu International Airport is made up of three distinct terminals. Overseas TerminalThe Overseas Terminal encompasses the majority of the airport and services domestic and international flights. Arrivals and departures are located on the second level, while the baggage claim areas and ground transportation are located on the first (ground) level. The two levels may be accessed by either escalator or elevator. Loading bridges are used to enplane and deplane all passengers on the second level. The Interisland TerminalThe Interisland Terminal services flights mainly to and from the major airports on the neighbor islands (Kahului Airport on Maui; Lihue Airport on Kauai; Kona International Airport at Keahole on the island of Hawaii; Hilo International Airport on the island of Hawaii; Lanai Airport on Lanai; and Molokai Airport on Molokai). Hawaiian Airlines has a few mainland flights departing directly from the Interisland Terminal. Arrivals and departures are located on the second level, while the baggage claim areas and ground transportation are located on the first (ground) level. The two levels may be accessed by either escalator or elevator. Loading bridges are used to enplane and deplane all passengers on the second level. The Commuter TerminalThe Commuter Terminal services smaller propeller-driven and regional jet aircraft, traveling to and from all the major airports, as well as, the smaller commercial service airports (i.e. Lanai, Hana, Kapalua, Waimea-Kohala, Molokai and Kalaupapa Airports) in Hawaii. Commuter aircraft use steps for enplaning and deplaning passengers; therefore lifts or ramps are used for passengers with mobility impairments. It is recommended that airlines are informed of any special requests in advance.
