Welcome to Hilo International Airport

Kaulana mai nei ʻo Hilo ʻeā

Ka ua Kanilehua ʻeā

Ka ua hoʻopulu ʻili ʻeā

Ka ʻili o ka malihini ʻeā

Renowned is Hilo

For the [Kanilehua] rain that sings upon the lehua

The rain that soaks the skin

The skin of the visitors

These lyrics penned by the late Uncle Joseph Kalima Sr. describe the essence of the Hilo experience.  Although there’s nothing quite like a sunshiny Hilo day, it’s the rain that brings life to the land; the verdant landscapes, lush tropical forests, cascading waterfalls, magnificent orchids and marvelous anthuriums for which Hilo is renowned.  Owned and operated by the Hawaii Department of Transportation, the Hilo International Airport has been the gateway to Hawai’i island since 1929.  Stroll through the ferns and flowers cultivated with care by our grounds keep staff or relax in the retro cushioned koa club chairs and sofas.  (Don’t fall asleep and miss your flight now!)  Under the able leadership of district manager Steve Santiago I invite you to come and enjoy the beauty of Hilo, my hometown.

Mahalo palena ‘ole,

Hawaii Airports District Manager
