Hawaii Foodbank Drive 2009 OCS To Again Lead State Employees

Every year, the Hawaii Food Bank (HFB) turns to the Office of Community Services (OCS) to coordinate the State Employee coalitions’ efforts to fight hunger in Hawaii. Through OCS’ tireless efforts in 2008 the State raised and donated over $171,000 and 86,000 pounds of food. But even with this sizeable contribution made by the State of Hawaii’s employees feeding Hawaii’s hungry has and will always be a great challenge.

Looking at Hawaii’s economy these past months, we have seen increased layoffs and housing forclosures, this means more people will be depending on the HFB to feed their families. The increased food needs of the low-income and unemployed not being met are what OCS and the rest of the State Employees set out to alleviate.

To live up to its motto of ‘strengthening communities and improving lives,’ OCS is striving to meet the important goals it set out to achieve for the State coalition this year of $150,000 and 100,000 pounds of food for the HFB. OCS, working alongside the HFB encourages everyone this year to give generously and support the goal of helping feed Hawaii’s children, the elderly, the homeless, low-income families, the disabled and those needing temporary assistance.
