Service Programs for Transportation (LBR 903-06)
The counties of Hawaii and Maui are primarily rural in nature, with many small communities separated geographically by long distances. The proposed services will address the transportation needs of low-income persons, including the working poor, the elderly, the disabled, children and youth, who live in rural communities and former plantation camps where limited or non-existent transportation restricts their access to basic services and limits their social independence. The lack of public transportation services that operate or are designed to operate in rural and small urban areas is a significant barrier to getting and maintaining employment for low-income workers. Improving transportation services or mobility options in non-urbanized areas can significantly improve the economic outcomes for these workers. These services are also needed by many people who either cannot drive or afford to drive. Public transit continues to play an important role in the state and local transportation scene, connecting thousands of state residents to jobs, schools and other destinations.
These programs provide these means of transportation to the people of Hawaii.
