Creating a Healthier Hawai‘i
Lt. Governor Aiona recently participated in two events to help make Hawai`i healthier by supporting more active communities that encourage physical activity and nutrition, and create a more healthy and productive workforce.
Lt. Governor Aiona speaks about the benefits of worksite wellness at the Physical Activity and Nutrition Summit.
During the “Living Pathways II Conference” on Oct. 29, the Lt. Governor joined the State Department of Health Healthy Hawai‘i Initiative and Kaua‘i Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition to highlight the importance of active living communities and healthy community design in an effort to improve the health and well-being of residents.
“Research shows that the more opportunities our communities have to be physically active, such as parks, bike lanes and sidewalks, the more likely our residents will engage in physical activity,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.
And during the Healthy Hawai‘i Initiative’s Physical Activity and Nutrition Summit on Nov. 3, the Lt. Governor discussed the obesity epidemic and how worksite wellness programs can positively affect Hawai‘i’s quality of life.
“For too long, our state and nation have allowed obesity, an entirely preventable problem, to become a public health epidemic,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Research shows that health promotion programs achieve an average return on investment for businesses of more than four to one when considering health care costs and absenteeism,” the Lt. Governor added.
