Lt. Governor Honors Students' Clean Energy Efforts
Continuing his strong commitment to promote energy independence in Hawai`i, Lt. Governor Aiona helped honor eight students from Farrington High School who drew national attention for inspiring awareness and appreciation for the environment.
The "Dream Team" from Farrington High School celebrates winning the grand prize in the Lexus Environmental Challenge.
The students claimed a $75,000 grand prize from the Lexus Environmental Challenge, a national competition designed by Lexus and Scholastic to educate and empower teenagers to think big about possible solutions that could make a positive impact on the environment.
Calling themselves the “Dream Team,” the students outperformed 350 teams in the national competition. The team focused on educating people around the world about the benefits of renewable energy sources, such as wind turbines, solar panels, fuel cells and hydropower. For the project, the team created videos, blogs and a website in multiple languages, and used social media websites to help spread the word.
“We are not only proud of your accomplishment, but also your effort to inspire awareness and appreciation for the environment,” Lt. Governor Aiona told the students at an outdoor assembly attended by more than 400 of their peers. “Energy independence is a critical issue facing our state, our nation and our world. Perhaps your greatest contribution to helping us address this issue is your efforts to draw national attention to this often overlooked problem.”
