“The Maui Writers Conference brings together many of the best literary minds from around the world, and its move to Honolulu will only further its popularity and impact on the international literary community,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.

This year’s conference, named “Maui Writers Conference…on the Road in Honolulu,” will be held at the Hawai`i Convention Center in Waikiki from August 29 to September 1, and it has a new hospitality sponsor, Outrigger Enterprises Group.

Buoyed by a $75,000 Hawai`i Tourism Authority grant, the Maui Writers Conference draws an estimated 1,200 visitors annually to Hawai‘i. Conference attendees, companions, delegates and volunteers spent approximately $2.6 million in 2005, generating an estimated $260,000 in state taxes.

Additionally, the conference exposes young people and local writers to many of the finest living authors of our time. More than 100 writers, including many from Hawai`i, have been published as a result of introducing their work at the conference.

“There is nowhere else in America where you will be surrounded by more great authors and great work in such a short period of time,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.
