Administration Welcomes New Military Leadership

Lt. Governor Aiona welcomes Lt. General Benjamin R. Mixon during a change of command ceremony for the U.S. Army Pacific.

Lt. General Benjamin R. Mixon replaced Lt. General John M. Brown, III, who stepped down after three-and-a-half years as the U.S. Army Pacific commanding general.

“It’s my great honor to be here on behalf of the people of the State of Hawai`i to say thanks to Gen. Brown for everything he’s done,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.

Lt. General Mixon, the incoming commander, will have 46,000 soldiers and civilians under his command.

“We are here to support and assist General Mixon in every way possible,” Lt. Governor Aiona said during the ceremony. “We understand the challenges facing you, and we’re here to stand with you, side by side.”

The change of command comes at a time when Hawai‘i tops all other states with the highest percentage (4.9 percent) of people ages 16 to 64 in the armed forces.

Also, the U.S. Department of Defense is the second major source of revenues for the state; only tourism generates more revenue for Hawai‘i’s economy.

“The military has contributed to the security, culture and economy of our state for more than 100 years,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Our Administration looks forward to continue building upon the strong foundation into the future.”
