The Lt. Governor helped recognize about a dozen “unsung heroes” such as Sam Choy, who for the past 10 years has juggled operating an internationally recognized chain of restaurants with more than 2,080 hours of community service.

“This award is about recognizing and honoring people and organizations who believe that action is more important and effective than words,” Lt. Governor Aiona told more than 100 community members at the 11th annual event.

Award winners received a $1,000 donation in their name to a favorite charity.

Organizers of the event included the Department of Education, Department of the Attorney General, Aloha United Way, Kaiser Permanente, Oceanic Time Warner and Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawai‘i.
