The Lt. Governor addresses families and visitors at NFL's `Ohana Day.

The Lt. Governor praised the turnout for the event as a sign of its lasting appeal with fans of a game that Hawai‘i has committed $20 million to secure through 2009.

That equals about $4 million a year under the state’s five-year deal with the NFL, Lt. Governor Aiona told the crowd, adding that the state realizes the positive economic impact and public relations appeal from marketing Hawai‘i through national television coverage of the event in the middle of winter.

As a result, the state gains an estimated $3 million in taxes alone from visitors who come to Hawai‘i for the game, according to the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority. The overall economic impact of the game last year was $28 million in spending from 27,625 visitors.

As part of `Ohana Day, the Lt. Governor spoke to approximately 2,000 students as well as parents and teachers about the importance of leading healthy lives and strengthening families.
