Chinese Art and Culture Showcased
At the 59th annual Narcissus Festival Coronation Ball on Saturday, the Lt. Governor delivered remarks on the importance of preserving Chinese art and culture in Hawai`i and crowned the 2008 Narcissus Queen.
“The Chinese culture has played an important role in our state and the world,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Hawai‘i is fortunate to have benefitted from the values, customs and traditions of the Chinese culture.”
The event is part of the celebration of the Chinese New Year, which falls on Feb. 7.
The Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawai`i organized the event, which culminated in the crowning of University of Hawai`i graduate school student Catherine Lei Wai Lan Wong Jayne.
The 350-member business group created the event more 50 years ago as part of its efforts to promote business and economic development while preserving Chinese culture and encouraging civic responsibility.
