The Lt. Governor credited the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Minority Fellowship Program with helping to create opportunities for nearly 1,000 psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses and social workers since 1973.
“These individuals often serve in key leadership positions in mental health and substance abuse services,” Lt. Governor said. “The fellows are extremely accomplished doctoral candidates in nursing at leading higher education institutes across the nation.”
While in Hawai`i, the group participated in activities to learn about Hawai‘i’s people, their mental health and substance abuse system, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander health disparity issues and visit community provider sites such as the Wai`anae Coast Comprehensive Community Health Center.
The reception at Washington Place follows an $8.2 million federal grant the Lt. Governor accepted from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration to help bolster the Lingle-Aiona Administration’s ongoing efforts to improve and expand substance abuse recovery services in Hawai‘i.
