“Make no mistake about it: Our Administration is working each day to reduce and prevent alcohol and substance abuse in Hawai‘i,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.

The Lt. Governor’s remarks came during a keynote address for the Philippine Medical Association of Hawai‘i’s annual installation of officers.

Lt. Governor Aiona pointed to studies that show more residents are now seeking treatment for substance abuse.

According to the latest figures available, there were 6,805 admissions to drug and alcohol treatment centers across the state in 2006. That figure is up from 5,819 a year earlier.

To help address the problem, the state spends roughly $25 million each year to provide substance abuse treatment services for both adults and youth.

In addition, nearly 50 community programs across the state are meeting alcohol and substance abuse needs and making a significant difference in the lives of those on the path to recovery.

Among them is the Salvation Army Family Treatment Services, which provides free services to women who are either pregnant or have an infant.

“It’s no secret that many adults have gone untreated because they are too ashamed to tell friends or family,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Our outreach is clearly about advocating early and consistent support for appropriate treatment that will allow our residents recovering from alcohol and drug addiction to manage their problem over time.”
