Neighbor Island Communities to Send Off Robotics Teams

— filed under:

Lt. Governor Aiona will join neighbor island communities next week in hosting rallies to congratulate local robotics teams and cheer them on as they prepare for the 2008 NASA/BAE Systems FIRST in Hawai`i Regional Robotics Competition on March 27-29.

Adminission to the regional competition at the University of Hawai`i Stan Sheriff Center is free, and the community is encouraged to attend.

Thirty-seven teams, representing 25 Hawai`i schools from O`ahu, Maui, Kaua`i and the Big Island, as well as 12 teams from the mainland (California, Florida, New Jersey and West Virginia) will converge on the Manoa campus to compete in what is called the “varsity sport of the mind.”

“Our young people have been preparing for months to compete in the inaugural FIRST in Hawai`i regional,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “It means a lot to them to show the world what they’re capable of.”

Send off rallies are scheduled to take place from 6:00-7:00 p.m. as follows:

  • Tuesday, March 18 - Kahului, Maui - Maui Community College Kalama Room 103
  • Wednesday, March 19 - Hilo, Hawai`i - Mo`oheau Park Bandstand
  • Thursday, March 20 - Waimea, Hawai`i - Thelma Parker Gymnasium
  • Tuesday, March 25 - Lihu`e, Kaua`i - Kaua`i War Memorial Convention Hall

The Lt. Governor will be a featured speaker at each send off rally, which will be free of charge. Members of the community are encouraged to attend and show their support.

“We worked toward a Hawai`i regional so more students from our state would have a chance to compete, especially from the neighbor islands,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “It’s important for the local communities to come out and show their support for all the hard work these young people have put into preparing for the competition. Robotics is much more than learning about science, technology, engineering and math; it's also about problem solving and building relationships that will help them throughout their careers.”

The Lingle-Aiona Administration is supporting robotics as a key component of the Hawai`i Innovation Initiative to engage Hawai`i students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education and to foster the innovation capacity in Hawai`i residents.

The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common engineering problem in a six-week timeframe using a standard kit of parts that included motors, batteries, a control system and a mix of automation components-but no instructions.

The public is encouraged to attend the competition on March 27-29 to cheer on Hawai`i's teams.
