'Youth of the Year' Honored
The Lt. Governor was a guest judge at the State Capitol last week for a "Youth of the Year" program organized by the Hawai`i Alliance of Boys and Girls Clubs.
Carina Surface, a Moanalua High School student, was announced as this year’s winner. Carina has been a leader among her peers for her vocal opposition to drug use. She is also co-captain of her robotics team at Moanalua High School.
She will represent Hawai`i in the regional competition for Youth of the Year later this year. Five regional candidates then compete for the National Youth of the Year award.
Carina was among five finalists who stood as examples that groups such as the Hawai‘i Alliance of Boys & Girls can help hardworking young people make the successful transition to adulthood. Young people ages 14-18 were considered for recognition as Youth of the Year.
The Youth of the Year program is designed to be an effective tool for developing leadership qualities in young people who had to overcome enormous odds in their lives.
