Lt. Governor and Mrs. Aiona Observe Memorial Day
The Lt. Governor and Mrs. Aiona celebrated Memorial Day at two separate events honoring military veterans and loved ones who have passed away.
They joined Governor Linda Lingle and more than 40,000 spectators at Ala Moana Beach Park for the 10th annual Lantern Floating Hawai‘i ceremony.
The ceremony, organized by the Na Lei Aloha Foundation, is rooted in the Japanese tradition of honoring the dead by allowing participants to write prayers for deceased loved ones on pieces of paper that were attached to floating lanterns.
Before that event, the Lt. Governor and Mrs. Aiona remembered veterans at the Mayor’s 59th Annual Memorial Day ceremony at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
An estimated 2,000 people participated in the event, organized by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation.
