Native Hawaiian Kupuna Honored

Lt. Governor Aiona helped the Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce recognize kupuna who have been able to balance success in business with their Hawaiian values.
The 32nd Annual O‘o Awards brought together more than 600 people to recognize Hawaiian cultural expert, musician, poet, songwriter and businessman Peter Apo and fashion designer Nake‘u Awai. The prestigious award is presented to native Hawaiians who have contributed to the betterment of Hawaiians, their communities and their professions.
In his remarks, Lt. Governor Aiona acknowledged the importance of honoring our kupuna and the values that guide them.
“One of the simple reasons is that our kupuna give us life, heritage and culture,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “It’s important to recognize the wisdom and the kindness that our kupuna possess and strive to pass that on to future generations.”
Proceeds from the event went to support scholarships and programs for native Hawaiian youth, entrepreneurs and businesses.
