State Holds Healthy Living Forum
Lt. Governor Aiona opened the 2008 Hawai`i Physical Activity and Nutrition Forum recently to continue the Administration's efforts to counter health risks associated with a lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating habits that lead to diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.
“This forum is about tackling these important issues,” Lt. Governor Aiona told an estimated 200 people who gathered at the Hilton Hawaiian Village for the forum sponsored by the Department of Health. “I know many people believe their diet is a personal choice and responsibility. But our Administration wants to help people make good choices.”
The outreach includes working with developers to design healthier communities that allow people to be more physically active. The Administration has also been working closely with grocery stores, farmers markets and the Hawai‘i Farm Bureau Federation to promote healthier food options.
In 2006, more than 20 percent if adults in Hawai‘i were considered obese. State government research also shows that adult obesity was directly responsible for an estimated $290 million in medical expenses in 2003. And heart disease remains the state’s leading cause of death, killing more than 3,100 people in 2005.
“We will do our part to provide the people of Hawai‘i with the tools they need for healthier living,” Lt. Governor Aiona said, “but we must all work together for our residents to eat healthier and take part in more physical activity.”
