A central feature of the $1.8 billion capital improvement plan is for the state and its partners, including the counties, construction industry, labor unions and nonprofit organizations, to focus on more than 1,500 infrastructure projects statewide that have been already budgeted and approved by the Legislature and are ready to start construction over the next 18 months.

“As families and businesses across Hawai‘i are reviewing their finances, our Administration is moving forward with our comprehensive, five-point action plan to strengthen the state economy,” Lt. Governor Aiona said during a weekly radio address in November.

Included in the plan are projects like the resurfacing and highway lighting replacement on Nimitz Highway and Ala Moana Boulevard in Waikiki. The Lt. Governor in December helped usher in the new road that will allow motorists to better drive into – or zip through – Waikiki without facing traffic gridlock.

Three months earlier, he traveled to Maui to help open the $31.7 million Haleakala Highway, a 5.5 mile stretch of road that has been widened from three lanes to four.

Then, in May, he participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for the $17 million East-West Road in Kapolei, where the project is expected to dramatically improve the quality of life for traffic-wary residents of that area.
