Tribute to Saint Damien

Lt. Governor Aiona speaks at an event honoring the life and canonization of Saint Damien.

"In the purest definition, Saint Damien's life meant that when you serve people, all barriers are broken and you become one with them," said Lt. Governor Aiona.  "I believe far too often, that in the world of public service, we forget that that there are no barriers and we serve all of the people of Hawai`i."

During the proceedings, a relic of St. Damien was placed in the Cathedral of Our Lady Peace where the Sacred Hearts priest was ordained.  The event ended a statewide tour by the relic, which made stops in three Mainland cities.

"Saint Damien surrendered his life to a call from God, which modeled for all of us a life of courage, humility, sacrifice, love, compassion and in the end, death," he added.

The Lt. Governor traveled to Rome last month for the canonization of Saint Damien and presented a proclamation he and Governor Linda Lingle signed declaring Oct. 11 as "Saint Damien Day" in Hawai`i.
