New Gym Opens in Windward O`ahu
In a victory for the Windward Oahu community, Le Jardin Academy unveiled a new gymnasium that Lt. Governor said offers new opportunities for the school's students.
Speaking at the grandopening of the Charles B. Wang Gymnasium, Lt. Governor Aiona applauded the new facility for its potential to help provide a sense of community to an area where there is a recognized shortage of in-door recreational facilities.
In his speech, Lt. Governor Aiona also expressed to students his excitement for what he described as their new home court advantage. In the past, the school's athletic teams had to borrow facilities across Windward O`ahu to play in.
Construction on the 750-capacity gym started in February 2007, and was completed in June 2009. Features include courts for basketball, volleyball, badminton and indoor soccer. The Charles B. Wang Foundation contributed $3 million to the project. An additional $200,000 was donated by the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust.
In concluding his speech, Lt. Governor yelled "Go Bulldogs!" to students who squealed in delight at the reference to the nickname of the school's athletic teams.
