Lt. Governor Aiona speaks to a chef at the 3rd Annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Speaking to a crowd of an estimated 350 people at the Hawai‘i Restaurant Association’s Hall of Fame Induction ceremony, Lt. Governor Aiona praised the industry for confronting the current economic conditions.

“This Administration appreciates all that restaurants have and are going through with their businesses,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “We are taking a page out of your play books by doing more with less; spending within our means; and making the difficult decision necessary to weather this economic storm while positioning ourselves to be more competitive when conditions improve.”

Last year, restaurants accounted for an estimated $3.1 billion in sales. That figure was attributed to business generated by 3,100 restaurants statewide.

The event, held Sept. 21 at the Hawai‘i Prince Hotel, marked the third time that the association inducted members into its Hall of Fame.

The inductees were:

  • Betsy Cardoza, Tokyo Tei
  • Calvin Chun, Patti's Chinese Kitchen/Lynn's Delicatessen
  • Frank J. Hata, Chairman Emeritus, Y. Hata & Co., Ltd.
  • Barbara Holm, Trade Publishing
  • William Mau, Lau Yee Chai
  • Seiichi and Matsuno Nakagawa, Seaside Restaurant and Aqua Farm
  • Hideo and Fujiko Nonaka, Mike's Café
  • Ed Wary, Auntie Pasto's/Dixie Grill
  • Martin and Jean E. Wyss, Swiss Inn
