LT. GOVERNOR AIONA TO PROMOTE FAMILY LITERACY

For Immediate Release: November 4, 2009

HONOLULU – Lt. Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr. today announced he will travel to Maui and Hawai`i Island to help engage families in reading-related activities as part of the Read Aloud America's Read Aloud Program (RAP).  The Lt. Governor has been actively involved with the literacy program since 2004 and helped to expand RAP across the state.

"As parents, we are the models for our children and our actions have the most significant influence and impact on their lives," Lt. Governor Aiona said.  "It is crucial that we look at the home environment, in addition to the school environment, in developing positive values for tomorrow’s leaders."

"The Lt. Governor has been a strong supporter of the Read Aloud Program and with his help, the program has become the largest family literacy program in America," Read Aloud America founder Jed Gaines said.  "It doesn't matter if it is a large or small school; the Lt. Governor is devoted to encouraging reading for the entire family."

Read Aloud America is expecting a turnout of 150 to 700 attendees depending on the event.  The scheduled RAP sessions are:
•    Thursday, Nov. 5, 5:45 p.m – 7:45 p.m.
Hawai`i Island – Ho`okena Elementary School, Cafeteria
•    Tuesday, Nov. 10, 5:45 p.m – 7:45 p.m.
Maui – Wailuku Elementary School, Cafeteria
•    Wednesday, Nov. 18, 5:45 p.m – 7:45 p.m.
Maui – Kahului Elementary School, Cafeteria

RAP began in 1999 and has served over 165,000 attendees and over 80 programs across Hawai`i.  The program is a free community event at schools that brings families, businesses, community organizations and individuals together.

RAP takes place on school evenings in cafeterias where students listen to volunteers read stories.  After each session, parents are given the opportunity to provide feedback about the program.
