Maintaining focus on the road

Lt. Governor Aiona and state transportation officials today are rolling out a new round of messages aimed at helping drivers maintain focus during the back-school-school season. Called "Beat the School Jam," the annual campaign is designed to raise public awareness about the increased traffic from the 178,000 students statewide who are returning to classes.

Motorists are being asked to anticipate delays and to carpool, among other things, to help relieve congestion. At the same time, they are being discouraged from eating, applying makeup or shaving in their cars during commutes.

As part of the campaign, motorists are also being urged to comply with Oahu's law against using hand-held cellphones while driving. In addition, all motorists are being discouraged from typing text messages while driving.
