New twist in tax laws

A new law in Hawai`i will prevent taxpayers from getting an income-tax deduction for gambling losses. The measure is part of a broader effort to prevent budget gaps as state tax revenue declines while expenses increase. It also coincides with the plans to step up enforcement of tax collection.

The state Department of Taxation has been given additional resources and tools to ensure that all sectors of Hawai`i's economy are paying their fair share of taxes.

The department's newly created Special Enforcement Section has been tasked with investigating reported or suspected violations of tax laws, especially at cash-based businesses.

The unit is authorized to inspect books, records and premises without notice. For more information, visit www.hawaii.gov/tax, or call one of the following offices between 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday:
