Keeping our keiki safe
The State Department of Transportation (DOT) conducted a statewide training program to provide child passenger safety (CPS) technicians with the latest information on technologies and safety standards for installing child safety seats. Through the program, CPS technicians received hands-on training about installing the newest child safety seats and the dangers of improperly installing a seat, such as placing a seat in front of an air bag.
National statistics show that motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among children over the age of 1. By using properly installed child safety seats, deaths can be reduced by as much as 71 percent for infants under the age of 1, and by as much as 54 percent for toddlers.
All four Hawai`i counties offer free community car seat checks and fitting stations where certified CPS technicians instruct parents or caregivers about installation and evaluation of their car seats.
Hawai`i's child passenger restraint law requires children 3 years of age and under to ride in a child safety seat and children between the ages of 4 and 7 to ride in a child safety seat or booster seat.
