Promoting healthy lifestyles and communities
Lt. Governor Aiona is joining forces with the State Department of Health's Healthy Hawai`i Initiative and the Kaua`i Nutrition and Physical Activity Coalition to improve the health and well-being of residents on Kaua`i and throughout the state.
The Living Pathways II Conference will feature remarks by the Lt. Governor and Mark Fenton, a nationally recognized expert in active living community policies and designs, to highlight ways to make Hawai`i healthier by creating more communities that encourage physical activity and nutrition.
Community design has a significant influence on healthy behaviors and is promoted by having bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly community designs, recreational facilities and schools located in walkable neighborhoods.
Adopting an active lifestyle is one way for residents to reduce obesity and minimize the health risks associated with being overweight. Many of Hawai`i’s public health concerns, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, asthma, injury and depression, can be addressed in part by community design.
The public is encouraged to attend the free workshops:
• Tuesday, Oct. 27
