Lt. Governor Aiona points to statistics that show Hawai`i teens perceive smoking at least a pack of cigerattes a day to be a greater risk to their health than experimenting with marijuana or excessively drinking alcohol.
According to the national survey on substance abuse in Hawai`i, cigarette smoking was perceived to be the greatest health risk of 69 percent of Hawai`i youth between ages 12 and 17.
By comparison, binge drinking was considered the greatest risk to 41 percent of Hawai`i youth in that age group, while marijuana captured 33 percent of their votes.
