"Shared responsibility:" The 2009 Hawai‘i legislative session begins today with the Lingle-Aiona Administration anxious to continue this year’s biggest focus – strengthening the economy and creating jobs. Lt. Governor Aiona joined Governor Linda Lingle and newly elected as well as returning leaders of the Hawai‘i Legislature at the State Capitol Jan. 21 for the start of a new legislative session.
Lt. Governor Aiona today visits Hilo to help launch a program designed to reintegrate into society former inmates from the Hawai`i Community Correctional Center on the Big Island.
Nine state laws took effect Jan. 1 to promote in Hawai`i everything from protecting children from Internet predators to forcing parents to pay child support.
Lt. Governor Aiona will visit Kona on Thursday to discuss with residents the Administration's five-point plan to stimulate the economy by creating jobs.
Lt. Governor Aiona today discusses the local economy with members of the Structural Engineers Association of Hawai`i at the 40th installation banquet for their board of directors.
On Thursday, Hawai`i became the first state in the U.S. to make the federally-mandated switch to digital TV. The Federal Communications Commission is urging Hawai`i consumers with questions to contact their local broadcasters or the FCC in Honolulu at 541-2388 or 541-2389.
Hawai`i will soon enjoy a recreational renaissance if a plan supported by Lt. Governor Aiona is passed during the 2009 Legislative Session. The $240 million statewide initiative would reinvigorate stewardship and recreational opportunities of 54 state parks, 20 small boat harbors, 25 boat ramps and landings, 275 miles of hiking trails and the Forest Reserve System.
Lt. Governor Aiona is alerting Hawai`i motorists to construction work that may complicate trips on roadways across the state in the week ahead.
Among the trickiest areas to navigate on the Big Island will be the Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway, where a road widening project continues to force intermittent lane closures in both directions between Henry Street and Ke`alakehe Parkway. Starting Monday, that area will be closed for 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
"Everyone in Hawai`i has been affected in some way by the economic downturn, and we are taking a proactive approach that will lead to economic recovery and long-term prosperity for all of Hawai`i," Lt. Governor Aiona said before attending Governor Linda Lingle's seventh State of the State address to the people of Hawai`i.
