LT. GOVERNOR STRENGTHENS TIES WITH CHINA'S GUANGDONG PROVINCE

July 23 - The second-highest ranking official from southern China's densely populated Guangdong Province met with Lt. Governor Aiona during his first official visit to Hawai`i last week.

Tong Xing, vice governor of Guangdong Province, led a seven-member delegation on the mission to strengthen long-standing diplomatic ties between Hawai`i and the province.

More than 80 percent of Chinese in Hawai`i can trace their ancestry to Guangdong Province, which has had a sister-state relationship with Hawai`i for more than 20 years, and was renewed in 2005 during Governor Lingle's official trade mission.

Discussions between the Lt. Governor and the delegation focused on cooperation between Guangdong and Hawai`i in tourism, education and environmental protection.

After the visit, a member of the delegation called the meeting an important diplomatic accomplishment for Guangdong.

"It was a pleasure for me and the delegation to visit Hawai`i," said Zhong Qiquan, vice chairman for the Standing Committee of the People's Congress of Guangdong Province. "I believe, with your continuous support, Hawai`i and Guangdong will see more exchanges and cooperation."
