LT. GOVERNOR FIGHTS LATEST DRUG ABUSE TREND

Aug 13 - Lt. Governor Aiona is helping draw attention to an alarming national trend among young people who are overdosing on non-prescription cough and cold medicines that are widely available in drugstores and supermarkets.

Speaking at a luncheon last week hosted by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America, the Lt. Governor discussed the dangers of young people intentionally consuming large amounts of cough medicine for their intoxicating effects.

"It's important for all of us here to work together to educate parents and young people about the inherent dangers of drug abuse," said Lt. Governor Aiona. "Their lives could depend on it."

The Lt. Governor addressed the group as part of National Medicine Abuse Awareness Month. Prescription drug abuse has very serious health consequences and can be deadly.

In his remarks, the Lt. Governor suggested that overdoses reflect how over-the-counter medicines are becoming more popular as recreational drugs for young kids.

"We need to be vigilant in preventing this new trend from spreading," said Lt. Governor Aiona. "And that starts with being aware there's a problem."
