LT. GOVERNOR HONORS THOSE LOST DURING ATTACK
December 7 - Joined by
families from the Marine Corps Base Hawai`i on Pearl Harbor Day, Lt.
Governor Aiona honored the brave men and women lost during the attack on
Kane`ohe Naval Air Station 66 years ago.
Eighteen sailors and two civilians were killed on Dec. 7, 1941. About 36
planes were stationed at Kane`ohe that morning, and 27 were destroyed or
badly wrecked.
One plane, on patrol during the first wave of enemy fire, assisted in the
sinking of a Japanese submarine. And Kane`ohe Naval Air Station defenders
shot down three enemy planes.
"Our citizens responded with the strength and resolve that characterizes
America in times of adversity," Lt. Governor Aiona said. "America was at
war, and an entire American generation stepped forward."
"I believe that it is only right that we honor those who have borne the
burden of defending our country," Lt. Governor Aiona told the crowd. "Like
those who fought here 66 years ago today, you are giving yourself to a
purpose far greater than that of any individual. From the bottom of my
heart, thank you."
