LT. GOVERNOR CALLS FOR CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION

December 11 - Emphasizing the need for the people of Hawai`i to be more directly involved in the democratic process, Lt. Governor Aiona held a news conference to call for a constitutional convention in Hawai`i.

Before the news conference, the Lt. Governor submitted a letter to the Office of Elections, certifying that voters will decide in the 2008 General Election whether to convene a constitutional convention.

"My action today allows the people of Hawai`i to voice their opinion on the need to update our Constitution," Lt. Governor Aiona said. "I cannot overstate the tremendous opportunity we have before us."

The 1978 Constitutional Convention helped establish term limits for the Governor and Lt. Governor, require an annual balanced budget, create the Judicial Selection Commission and adopt the Hawaiian language as an official state language of Hawai`i, among other significant developments.

"I trust the people of Hawai`i to do what is best for our future," Lt. Governor Aiona said. "Rarely does an opportunity come by of this magnitude, and I believe we should not pass it up."
