LANIAKEA YWCA CELEBRATES 80 YEARS OF SERVICE TO HAWAI`I'S WOMEN
June 21- Lt. Governor Aiona joined
members and employees of the Laniakea YWCA to highlight 80 years of service
to women. Themed “Past, Present and Future,” the event was reminiscent of
the 1920s. Organizers also announced that $5.2 million was raised toward the
YWCA’s capital campaign fund, which will pay for renovation plans.
“A renovated Laniakea will allow YWCA to continue its
commitment to drive social change, support women and prepare young women as
Hawai`i’s next generation of leaders,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.
Laniakea YWCA was founded in 1927 as the YWCA’s
flagship Hawai`i headquarters. Also known as the “Richards Street Y,” it was
the first building of architectural significance to be built by a
woman.
