LT. GOVERNOR AIONA, LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS ANNOUNCE CAMPAIGN TO CRACKDOWN ON UNDERAGE DRINKING
June 4 - Lt. Governor Aiona announced that laws regulating childhood
drinking will be strictly enforced and stores with a liquor license will be
closely monitored to ensure that alcohol is not being sold to minors.
“Childhood drinking must not be tolerated in our state,” said Lt.
Governor Aiona. “Parents need to realize that alcohol is a powerful drug
that impairs memory and verbal skills, alters perception and can jeopardize
children’s health and
safety.”
The activity is part of a broader statewide push to make it harder for young people to get alcohol, as graduation parties and the summer months create more opportunities for incidence of underage drinking. It also comes at a time when nine percent of sixth through twelfth graders, who participated in a recent statewide survey, said they drink on a daily basis, even though alcohol consumption is illegal for anyone under age 21.
