WALKERS HONORED FOR FUNDRAISING EFFORTS
June 6 - Lt. Governor Aiona joined members of March of Dimes Hawai`i Chapter
at the organization's 37th annual WalkAmerica Golden K Mahalo Reception. The
event honored walkers who have raised $1,000 or more to help prevent birth
defects, premature births and infant mortality.
“Newborn prematurity can happen to anyone,” said Lt. Governor
Aiona, who was also this year’s WalkAmerica honorary chair.
According to the March of Dimes Hawai`i Chapter, one in eight
babies are born premature each year in Hawai`i. In an average week in
Hawai`i, 43 babies are born premature and 28 are born with low birth
weight.
