LAW PROHIBITS SEX OFFENDERS FROM NAME CHANGE

May 8 - Lt. Governor Aiona rolled out a new law that prohibits registered sex offenders from legally changing their names without court approval.

“This bill is intended to prevent those who are on the sex offender registry, or who are registered as having committed crimes against minors, from obtaining a name change in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor,” said Lt. Governor Aiona.

The new law is in direct response to an increase in requests for name changes from convicted sex offenders. Lt. Governor Aiona unveiled the new law during a news conference at the State Capitol attended by key law enforcement officials, including Attorney General Mark Bennett.

The Office of the Lieutenant Governor processed 1,000 last year.
