ROYAL GUARD CELEBRATES 44th ANNIVERSARY
November 16 - Lt.
Governor Aiona reviewed the Royal Guard on the steps of `Iolani Palace in
honor of the annual ceremonial Posting of the Guard, as well as the 172nd
anniversary of King David Kalakaua’s birth.
Re-creations of the posting of the Royal Guard started on November 16,
1963, with 14 guardsmen commanded by Kapena Mohu Theodore Hussey. The
guardsmen of the new Royal Guard are members of Hawai`i’s Air National
Guard, and all are of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry.
The Lt. Governor was joined by Prince David Kawananakoa at the ceremony,
which was organized by the Royal Guard and Friends of `Iolani Palace.
Following the Posting of the Guard, the Department of Commerce and Consumer
Affairs hosted “The King’s Hula Concert Program,” which featured the Royal
Hawaiian Band, the Kamehameha Schools Hawaiian Ensemble under the direction
of Kaleo Trinidad, and the DCCA Glee Club.
