Honoring Volunteers Committed To Helping Others
Two citizen soldiers and an insurance company earned national recognition Monday at the State Capitol for their sense of duty to serve others, especially less fortunate people across the state.
Lt. Governor Aiona presented the 2008 “Presidential Volunteer Service Award” to Sgt. Hollie Morales, of the Hawai`i Air National Guard, and Sgt. Lovina Albritton, of the Hawai`i National Guard, along with Summerlin Life and Health Insurance Company.
They bring to 11 the total number of people and companies in Hawai`i to receive the award created by President Bush to encourage volunteer service.
Since 2006, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Honolulu has sought out people and companies that volunteer time to make such visible impacts as helping Hawai`i children who are vulnerable to substance abuse and depression.
“From giving aid to victims of natural disasters and homelessness to supporting our military service personnel in harm’s way, Hawai‘i’s citizens time and time again show their unwavering commitment to helping others,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “They do not volunteer their time and resources to be recognized, but we believe it is important to mark their achievements as well as the excellent model they have set for their fellow citizens.”
