Hawai`i Hosts Women Mayors From Philippines
Lt. Governor Aiona met Monday with 40 women mayors from the Philippines during their first official visit to Hawai`i, where they talked about strengthening diplomatic ties with the state.
In a 30-minute visit at the State Capitol with the Lt. Governor, the members of the Lady Municipal Mayors Association of the Philippines expressed strong interest in working closely with the Administration on initiatives focused on labor, health and education.
The mayors said that the main objective of their visit was to explore trade opportunities in those three particular areas.
The visit from the 262-member group comes at a time when the Lingle-Aiona Administration has strongly supported similar efforts in the past.
For instance, groups such as the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawai‘i have built their reputation on promoting goodwill and strengthening economic ties between Hawai`i and the Philippines.
Lt. Governor Aiona has routinely participated in the business group’s annual meetings. In offering his support to the lady municipal mayors, Lt. Governor noted that “the Filipino community has a long and proud history in Hawai`i, with roots tracing back more than a century.”
