At the 61st Annual Banquet of Champions held in Honolulu over the weekend, Lt. Governor Aiona acknowledged the dedication of champion athletes and the importance of women's participation in sports.
The Lt. Governor presents Leilehua quarterback Andrew Manley with the Honolulu Quarterback Club's award for Male Prep Athlete of the Year.
The recognition was part of the Lt. Governor’s welcoming remarks at the 61st Annual Banquet of Champions sponsored by the Honolulu Quarterback Club, a group of sports enthusiasts.
The event, sponsored by the Honolulu Quarterback Club, was a tribute to Hawai‘i athletes who have won championships and a celebration of the 35th anniversary of Title IX, the sexual equality law that greatly enhanced women’s participation in sports.
The Lt. Governor helped present an award to Dr. Donnis Thompson, the University of Hawai‘i’s first full-time women’s athletic director, who was also a state and national leader in promoting female participation in sports.
“Gender equity not only has left a legacy in sports, but it has spread the message of equality in all areas of education,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “The success of Title IX is just another example of sports crossing over into the real world and having a positive impact.”
