Lt. Governor Outlines Healthcare Initiatives
At the Hawai`i Orthopedic Association's recent annual meeting at Wai`alae Country Club, Lt. Governor Aiona outlined the Lingle-Aiona Administration's priorities for healthcare in the 2008 Legislative Session.
The Lt. Governor said the three points of focus are on increasing access to quality healthcare, strengthening the state’s ability to prepare for and respond to public health emergencies and improving personal health through personal responsibility.
The Lt. Governor explained that the Lingle-Aiona Administration is supporting medical liability reform legislation that will, among other things, establish limits for attorney’s fees, cap non-economic damages in medical malpractice suits at $250,000 and specify what constitutes as economic damages.
In addition, the Administration is again introducing legislation to reduce the number of health care facilities that must be approved by the state Health Planning and Development Agency, the Lt. Governor told the group.
Steps are also being taken to strengthen preparedness for public health emergencies and prevent the risk of serious illness such as obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, cancer and arthritis, Lt. Governor Aiona said.
“Let us commit to continue working together as we look to a brighter future of healthy children, healthy families and healthy communities in Hawai‘i,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.
