Professional Soccer Tournament Comes to Hawai`i

The Lt. Governor welcomed a new international soccer tournament to Hawai`i at a news conference to launch the 2008 Pan-Pacific Championship. The inaugural professional competition will be held at Aloha Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, Feb. 23.

“The Pan-Pacific Championship will showcase Hawai`i to the rest of the world,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Our state would like to see this premiere sports tournament played annually in Hawai`i, and we’re committed to working to achieve that goal.”
In his remarks, the Lt. Governor acknowledged the state’s role in securing the stadium for the tournament, which will feature professional players such as David Beckham of the Los Angeles Galaxy and Hawai‘i native Brian Ching of the Houston Dynamo, as well as teams from Japan and Australia.
The Lt. Governor praised the international broadcast of the tournament, saying it helps further expose the state’s tourism industry and role as an international sporting venue to key markets in Japan and other parts of Asia and the Pacific, where soccer fans will be watching their best teams play in Hawai‘i.
“We realize the enormous potential of the tournament and have worked closely with event organizers,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “It helps our tourism industry continue to build brand equity in important markets, and that’s a good thing for all of Hawai`i.”
