Chinese New Year Marked in Hawai`i

Continuing his ongoing support of Chinese culture in Hawai`i, Lt. Governor Aiona participated in the 2008 Annual Spring Banquet in Honolulu last week.
The Lt. Governor celebrates the Chinese New Year at the 2008 Annual Spring Banquet.
The event, organized by the Hawai`i Association of Chinese from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, is a celebration of the Chinese New Year.
During his remarks, the Lt. Governor called the celebration a "reminder of Hawai`i's strong ties to Chinese history and culture."
Dr. Sun Yat-Sen, considered by many to be the father of modern China, studied at `Iolani School in Honolulu as a youth before eventually organizing a Chinese revolutionary society in the state.
"Hawai`i is fortunate to have such a rich and culturally diverse population with strong ties to China and Taiwan," Lt. Governor Aiona said. "The Republic of China is an important economic and cultural partner of Hawai`i and the United States, and their celebration is our celebration."
