Lt. Governor Aiona opened a health and wellness fair to help residents learn how to incorporate a healthier lifestyle into their busy schedules.
“Eating one more servings of fruit and vegetables every day is simple to do and can add up to big health benefits,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Good nutrition and regular physical activity are fundamental to healthy living”
The event is part of a larger effort to focus on health and wellness for employees of the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations and Department of Taxation. Additional workshops will be provided throughout the year to enhance the skills and well-being of employees.
Hawai‘i’s obesity rate is the 47th lowest in the nation. However, one in five people in Hawai‘i was considered obese in 2005. And heart disease remains the state’s leading cause of death, killing more than 2,200 people in 2005.
“We must all work together to eat healthier and take part in more physical activity,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.
