“Clean energy is the future,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “We’re taking a collaborative, bipartisan approach to fundamentally change the way we use energy. It’s not an easy process, but it’s something we can all support.”

The Lingle-Aiona Administration recently formed a long-term partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate the transformation of Hawai`i into one of the world’s first economies based primarily on clean energy resources.

Governor Linda Lingle and U.S. Departmentment of Energy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Andy Karsner signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Monday to use renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, wave and geothermal to supply at least 70 percent of Hawai‘i’s energy needs by 2030.

“This innovative partnership is another significant step toward making Hawai`i a global leader in clean, renewable energy solutions,” Lt. Governor Aiona said.

On Tuesday, the Lt. Governor joined Governor Lingle in welcoming officials from 16 nations, the European Union and the United Nations who are in Hawai`i to participate in the Meeting of Major Economies on Energy Security and Climate Change. The meeting, which is being hosted by the United States, is a follow-up to the global warming conference held in Bali in December and the first meeting held in Washington, D.C. in September.

The Lt. Governor has actively promoted clean energy technologies across the state to increase energy efficiency and protect the environment. In November, the Lt. Governor capped a tour of renewable energy facilities in Hawai`i, including the Kaheawa Windfarm on Maui, the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai`i and Puna Geothermal Venture on the Big Island, and the proposed site of a bioethanol plant on Kaua`i.

In addition, the Lt. Governor co-sponsored a bipartisan resolution in July 2007 at the National Lieutenant Governors Association in Virginia to combat climate change and invest in renewable energy.
