Maui Celebrates Hawaiian Cowboys

The Lt. Governor and Mrs. Aiona traveled to Maui to participate in the Makawao Paniolo Parade.

The couple was featured in the 43rd annual rodeo parade, which coincides with the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Lt. Governor and Mrs. Aiona joined an estimated 3,000 people to help heighten awareness about Hawaiian cowboys who are known for their extraordinary roping and riding skills.

As part of the effort, the Lt. Governor presented a trophy to a colorful parade entrant, representing the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of a legendary Hawaiian cowboy, the Great Ikua Purdy, for putting ranching in Hawai‘i on the map in 1908 when he won the top prize at the Frontier Days World Championship in Wyoming.

The Lt. Governor’s trophy went to the group that put the most effort into their parade entry. The parade featured about 300 entrants, riding floats, cars, truck and horses.
