The young leaders were recognized by the Pacific Business News at the Hawai‘i Convention Center, where they drew applause for juggling the responsibilities of career, family, home and community.

“This type of recognition is a fitting tribute to a group of young innovators, who have enhanced our business community and have made great contributions to Hawai‘i,” said Lt. Governor Aiona, who assisted with presenting the awards to the young business leaders at the event, known as Forty Under 40.

The Administration also recognized all 40 young business leaders, presenting each with a written commendation co-signed by Governor Linda Lingle and Lt. Governor Aiona.

Gina Mangieri, 33, founder and president of the Cole Academy, was named the 2008 young business leader of the year. She is also a reporter for KHON-TV 2.

Also at the event, Jay Maddock, 35, director of the office of public health studies at the University of Hawai‘i, was named Bank of Hawai‘i’s 2008 community leader of the year.

A young leader in the Administration, Brennon Morioka, 39, director of the Department of Transportation, was also among the top 40 leaders.

In his remarks to the 40 young business leaders, Lt. Governor Aiona applauded the group for helping to “keep our state’s economic engine running. We are proud to have such an outstanding group of young leaders in our state.”
