The two-hour session held at Kahuku High School sought input from the public on the initiative, which was unveiled during the Governor’s State of the State Address in January.

Members of the community voiced their strong support for the proposal.

The proposal calls for the state to work in collaboration with private, public and nonprofit partners to acquire the Turtle Bay property, ensure the long-term economic viability of the resort and engage the community in deciding what to do with the undeveloped land.

Legislation to acquire and preserve Turtle Bay is making its way through the Hawai‘i Legislature, where it has received strong support.

“Please do everything in your power to preserve the North Shore by preventing development of the Turtle Bay area,” resident Dominique Desroches said.

“As a resident of the North Shore and the state of Hawai‘i, I am very much against expansion of the Turtle Bay property and support the state’s buying of the property,” said Robert B. Smith.

“The North Shore does not have the infrastructure to support further development of hotels at Turtle Bay,” said Scott Ray of Haleiwa. “The state needs to act now to preserve the environmental character of the North Shore.”
