Hawai`i Fallen Soldiers Honored

— filed under:

The Lt. Governor participated in a joint session of the state Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday where Governor Linda Lingle presented the Hawai`i Medal of Honor to the families of fallen service members with Hawai`i ties.

The Governor and Lt. Governor were joined at the ceremony by State Adjutant General Major General Robert Lee.

“The sacrifices and hardships endured by our military and their families should never be taken for granted,” Lt. Governor Aiona said. “Every day, we keep them in our hearts, minds and prayers.”

The Governor delivered remarks on behalf of the people of Hawai`i and shared her personal appreciation for the service and sacrifice of fallen soldiers, who defended their country as a place and as an ideal.

"The 31 men we honor today perished fighting for people they didn't even know, and there is nothing more noble," she said. "Our country is strengthened by those who are willing to sacrifice for the rest of us."

"The Hawai`i Medal of Honor is a small token of an enormous debt of gratitude we can never repay," she said.

In 2005, the Governor signed HB 8, which provides for "a Hawai`i Medal of Honor that would help express the deep appreciation and gratitude of the people of Hawai`i to the loved ones of members of the military who sacrificed their lives in defense of our nation and its freedoms."
